Chopi Chopi is a megayacht whose style can be defined as classic/modern, where functionality becomes aesthetics. The special naval features of this yacht displays the guiding principles of Ancona-based Italian shipyard CRN, where it is the fleet flagship and the 129th vessel built, as well as those of the Ferretti Group to which the shipyard belongs. Its naval architecture is the work of CRN Engineering, with external lines and compartmentation by Zuccon International Project, which approached the design of this star of the nautical scene with an almost urban vision, giving each detail its own role.

Devised as a residence for a large family, the yacht has 6 decks, one of which is for the Owner’s use only, with large interior spaces and private exterior spaces. The whole of the main deck is available to guests or other family members. The accommodation for the 31 crew members and the staff occupies most of the lower deck, and they also have working areas connected by staircases and lifts on every deck.

As you would expect from a grand residence like this, service and food storage areas fulfil a crucial role throughout the under lower deck, including cold storage facilities featuring a 6,000 litre unit, a 30,000 litre storage room, a laundry with 5 washing machines, a drying room, ironing room, etc. A highly unusual feature is the round control room, as on cruise ships – this enhances the idea of beauty and functionality, a concept that the entire vessel seems to take its inspiration from. If, as Berlin-based artist Christian Jankowski said, “the yacht is the perfect sculpture, a perfect self- contained vessel of information”, then Chopi Chopi is a prime example. Its shape is not born ex nihilo, but rather, as architect Gianni Zuccon says, “it is the result of a process of synthesis taking into consideration every parameter of design, and expressing certain information based on considerations that come from focusing on people’s lives. This great yacht marks the conclusion of a design experience with CRN that began 13 years ago, and the beginning of a new phase of research and development on specific themes. Wellbeing and comfort, understood as the possibility and extension of a qualitative living situation, are first amongst these”.

In the interiors, the relationship between space and natural light follows the current trend in opening out to the sea and an increased relationship with nature, although without indulging in excesses such as a vertiginous increase in transparent surfaces or planes of glass. “The boat must have a soft shape, fully expressing its movement through the water and the air, as if it might need to defend itself against them or challenge them by controlling them, not by opposing them or by being exposed to them like a building on land”. Perhaps for this reason, Chopi Chopi does not just have huge windows, walls that fold down to become terraces over the sea, sliding glass doors to make the interior and the exterior a single space, but also a variety of snug corners – comfortable, protected spaces in the open like those on ships of the past, whose relationship with the sea was guided by a more respectful love.

Each deck is a different world and an important link in the whole chain, and all are connected by a wide spiral staircase. This staircase is perhaps a little unbalanced in terms of size compared to the rest, but highly effective, almost symbolising the family unit – the predominant force and spirit of the ship.

Designed as a timeless vessel, Chopi Chopi looks almost simple in its visual impact, which is harmonious and deliberately not glamorous, but if, as Zuccon emphasises, we stop to look, we note that as you glance upwards, the boat’s shapes become more and more sculptural and complex. This discreteness and elegance of line is rare in ships of this size and is anything but easy to achieve. It’s no accident that the yacht’s name means cuddles. It is a gentle giant that prefers to glide over the sea, to dialogue and dance with it, rather than dominate it with its power.
